Somewhat less modern than we usually feature here, the work of Roman Opalka is just as remarkable in its grand vision as any other we’ve featured. As some point in the mid-1960’s, in Warsaw, Poland, Mr. Opalka began the process of writing down every number, in order, from 0 to infinity.
He would start at the top left of a canvas, and fill it with numbers until it was completely covered. At that point, he would start again with a new canvas.
He claimed his goal was to write until infinity. There’s a philosophical question in that, one which may require more pondering than I’m willing to do at the moment.
